The formula behind a good LinkedIn headline
A headline answers the question a stranger has when they see your name: what do you do, and is it for me? Your job title alone answers half of it. Add who you do it for, and either how you do it or one result, and the other half is answered too.
Almost every example below is one of five shapes:
- Role + who you help + result: “Physiotherapist helping runners come back from injury”.
- Role | skill · skill | field: “Backend engineer · Go, Postgres, Kubernetes · Payments infrastructure”.
- A promise: “I run a 6-person design studio · Websites for architects and interior designers”.
- With proof: “iOS engineer · 6 apps shipped, 2M downloads · Swift and SwiftUI”.
- Short and plain: “Wedding photographer · Lisbon and Porto”, when your role says enough.
Use the words people type into LinkedIn search: your role as recruiters and clients say it, and two or three skills. They count more than clever phrasing.

Where your headline shows, and where it’s cut

Your headline appears under your name on your profile, in search results, in “People you may know”, and next to every post and comment you write. On your profile it shows in full. Everywhere else it’s one line, so on a phone people see the first 60 characters or so, then “…”.
That’s why the role goes first. “Founder of aiCarousels · Turn one…” still says who’s talking; “Helping ambitious teams unlock…” doesn’t.

Headline mistakes to skip
- Only a job title and a company. It’s accurate and says nothing about who you help. Keep the title, then add one more thing.
- Only “open to work”. Say which work: the role, two skills and the field. Recruiters search for those, not for “opportunities”.
- Words everyone uses. “Passionate”, “results-driven”, “guru”, “ninja”. One real number or one named group of people says more.
- A list of ten keywords. Three skills read as expertise. Ten read as a CV pasted into one line.
- A row of emoji. One can work as a divider. A row of them is hard to read and says nothing.
- A headline that doesn’t match the rest. If it promises “B2B pricing”, your About, banner and posts should say the same thing.
Make it match your banner and About
The headline makes the promise in one line. Your banner can say it bigger, and your About explains it. When the three say the same thing, a visitor gets it in three seconds.
- Banner: the outcome, in big words. LinkedIn banner ideas has eight, made in the free banner maker.
- About: the story behind the headline, in about 1,000 characters. See LinkedIn About section examples.
- Everything together: check it as a stranger sees it with how to preview your LinkedIn profile.
