How to preview your Instagram profile before you change it

- Fill in your profile Open the free Instagram profile preview and add your picture, name, username, bio and link. The counters follow Instagram’s limits.
- Add the posts you’ll post next Drop in the pictures, mark each one a post, a carousel or a reel, and pin up to three. Or click Try a sample to see how it works first.
- Add your highlights Give each circle a cover and a short name. They sit between your bio and your grid.
- Check every screen, then update Instagram Switch between Profile, Feed, Reels and Story, in light and dark mode. When it reads well, make the change in the app.
Your pictures stay in your browser: they’re read on your device and never uploaded. The feed planner uses the same plan, so you can switch to it to work on the grid alone.
How to see your Instagram profile as others see it
Instagram has no “view as” option, so you have to look from outside your own account. There are three ways.
As a stranger: signed out
- Find your username. It’s at the top of your profile in the app, not the name under your picture.
- Open a private or incognito window in your browser, where you aren’t signed in to Instagram.
- Go to instagram.com/ followed by your username.
A public profile shows your posts and highlights. A private profile shows only your picture, name, bio and counts. Instagram may ask you to log in once you scroll, but the top of your profile, the part people decide on, is there.
As another member: a second account
Add a second account to the app: tap your username at the top of your profile, then Add Instagram account. Switch to it whenever you want to check. It sees your profile as any other member does, stories and highlights included.
Ask someone
A screenshot from a friend’s phone is still the most honest check: another screen size, and their own light or dark mode.
The first two ways match Guiding Tech (May 2024). Instagram moves its menus from time to time, so a label may read slightly differently in your version.
How to preview your Instagram grid before you post
Your profile grid shows every post as a 3:4 rectangle, cut from the middle. Instagram switched from square tiles to these taller ones in 2025. A 4:5 or square post loses a little at the edges there, so keep faces and words in the middle, or post in 3:4.
To see your next posts beside the ones already live, put them in the free Instagram feed planner and drag them around until the rows work. To check one post closely, with its caption, use the Instagram post preview, and see how to preview an Instagram post before posting.
Reorder the grid you already have
- Go to your profile and long-press any post in the grid.
- Tap Reorder grid.
- Drag posts to where you want them.
The new order saves at once and everyone sees it. Pinned posts stay at the top. Instagram rolled this out to the iPhone and Android apps in June 2026 (MacRumors), so update the app if you don’t see it yet.
What to check when you preview your profile
- Picture. A small circle, with a ring when you have a story. A face or a simple logo in the middle reads best. Try yours in the profile picture tester.
- Name. 30 characters, and people can find you by it. A word about what you do, after your name, helps.
- Bio. 150 characters. The first line says what you post, the second why to follow, and the link is the next step.
- Highlights. Short names and covers in one style. Three or four that explain you beat ten.
- Pinned posts. Up to three, always first. Pin the posts that explain who you are, not your most recent.
- The top rows of the grid. Do they look like one account? Check the 3:4 crop on covers with words.
- Light and dark. A thin dark logo or a black-on-transparent picture can vanish in dark mode.
If your pinned posts are carousels, give them covers that read at grid size: big words, one idea. In aiCarousels you can make a carousel in 3:4 for the grid, with your brand kit on every slide, so the grid looks like one account.
