How to italicize on Instagram, step by step
- Write your text in the formatter Open the free Instagram text formatter in your phone’s browser or on a computer. Type or paste your caption, bio line or message. No account needed.
- Select the words and press I Select only the words you want slanted and press I. On a computer, Ctrl/⌘+I does the same. Press B as well for 𝙗𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙘.
- Copy it Press Copy text. Before you do, check the tool’s preview: it cuts your caption where Instagram shows “… more”, so you can see your first line fits.
- Paste it into Instagram Paste into a new caption, a comment or a DM. For your bio, go to your profile, tap Edit profile, then Bio, paste and save (Instagram’s own steps: its help centre).
Italics in captions, bio, comments and DMs
In a caption
Format the caption first, then paste it when you write the post, or edit an existing caption and paste over it. Italics read as a softer voice, so they suit an aside, a title, a quoted line, or the one word you’d stress if you said it out loud. A whole caption in italics is tiring to read on a phone.
Writing the caption for a carousel? In aiCarousels, your writer drafts it from your slides, with a dashed line where Instagram cuts it with “…more”. Copy it into the formatter to add the italics, then paste.
In your bio
The bio holds 150 characters, according to Later. A short italic tagline under a plain first line looks deliberate. Keep your name and the words people search for in normal letters: Instagram search matches plain text, and styled letters are different characters.
In comments and DMs
Same method: format, copy, paste. In a DM, italics work well for a quote or a title. If you’re writing to someone on an old phone, send a short test first: a device without the right font shows small boxes instead of letters.
Italics on Instagram, place by place
| Place | Italics? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Captions | Yes | Format, copy, paste into the caption |
| Bio | Yes | Edit profile › Bio, paste, save. 150 characters |
| Comments and replies | Yes | Paste into the comment box |
| DMs | Yes | Paste into the message box |
| Story and Reels text | Fonts built in | Pick one of Instagram’s fonts, or paste italic text into the text box |
| Name and username | Name only | Styled letters in your name make it harder to find. Keep it plain |
| Hashtags | No | An italic hashtag is different characters, so it won’t work as a hashtag |

Can you italicize Instagram Stories and Reels text?
Stories and Reels are the one place Instagram gives you a choice of fonts. Its text tool has a font picker, and Later reports that Instagram added many new fonts and text effects for Stories and Reels in late 2024. Some of them already lean or look handwritten.
If you want italics in a font the picker doesn’t have, use the same trick as in captions. Copy your italic text from the formatter, open the text tool in your Story, then tap and hold until Paste appears. Check it before you share: the Story font decides how the letters look.
Why it works, and why it sometimes looks odd
Instagram’s text boxes take plain text only, and Later says it in so many words: Instagram doesn’t offer built-in font options. The italics you see in other people’s captions are characters, not formatting.
Unicode, the standard every phone uses for text, includes a block of styled letters called Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols. It was made so mathematicians could tell different letter styles apart, and it has a full italic alphabet. A formatter swaps your letters for those. Because they’re characters, they paste into any app and stay italic.
That has three side effects worth knowing:
- Search can’t read them. An italic word is made of different characters from the plain one, so it won’t match a search.
- Screen readers struggle. They may skip the letters or read each one out by name. Scope advises plain text whenever everyone needs to get the message.
- Unicode itself says don’t overdo it. The standard recommends against using these letters in place of real formatting, which is one more reason to keep them to a few words.
Italic, bold or bold italic?
Which style to use on Instagram
| Italic | Bold | Bold italic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reads as | A quieter voice, an aside | The point, the number | A strong aside |
| Best for | Titles, quotes, one stressed word | Your hook’s key words, results | A one-line tagline |
| Numbers | Stay upright | Turn bold | Stay upright |
| Use per caption | A few words | A few words | One phrase at most |
Italics not showing? Quick fixes
- It pasted as normal text. You copied before formatting, or from the wrong box. Press Copy text in the formatter and paste again.
- Some letters are boxes. The phone or app reading it has no font for those characters. Current iPhones, Android phones and browsers show them; very old ones may not.
- The numbers aren’t italic. That’s expected: there are no italic digits in this set. Use bold for numbers.
- Blank lines disappeared. Leave Keep empty lines on in the formatter before you copy.
Italics in a real Instagram post
One italic phrase in the caption, the stress where you’d put it out loud, and a carousel that makes the same point slide by slide.
On the slides themselves you don’t need the Unicode trick. In the aiCarousels editor, select the words and press Italic for real italics, and a theme sets the fonts for every slide.
More Instagram text styles
The formatter does the rest of the styles Instagram doesn’t have, the same way: strikethrough on Instagram with S, underline with U, and bold with B in the Instagram bold text tool.
